PRESS RELEASE

"Shifting in Silence" refers its title from artist and poet Etel Adnan's 2020 book 'Shifting the Silence' to bring together the distinct works of four artists who primarily work in paint. The artists approach painting in their own unique ways, resulting in a diverse exhibition that captures the essence of contemporary Irish painting.

The exhibition at Rathfarnham castle features Welch's figuration, Conway's abstract materiality, Hallahan's ephemeral abstractions, and Roche's explorations of the built environment. These contrasting artistic styles will offer a new look into what painting can do in today’s world, offering a visual conversation of contemporary Irish painting. The historic rooms of Rathfarnham castle add an extra layer of depth to the exhibition and the works.

All four artists have an impressive track record, having exhibited their works both nationally and internationally. The exhibition brings together works made for this exhibition that present an evolving landscape of Irish painting.

The exhibition will spark broader conversations about the role of painting in today's fast-moving society, a conversation entirely visual. "Shifting in Silence" prompts discussions about the relationship between art, society, and technology, while offering insights and optimism through artistic exploration.

The exhibition opens to the public on November 2nd with an opening event on Saturday November 4th and the exhibition runs until December 17th 2023. Everyone is welcome to experience "Shifting in Silence" and engage with the meaningful dialogues within the artworks.
